Dice Jean-Luc Godard en su película Nuestra música: A partir de 1948 el pueblo de Israel se vuelve ficción y el pueblo palestino, documental. Plano y contraplano. Dos caras de la misma moneda. En tiempos de obsolescencia programada, de novedad constante, hay cineastas que proponen hacer cine reciclado, buscar en los desechos de la historia, encontrar lo perdido, lo olvidado e inventar, mediante el montaje, una nueva memoria. En el trabajo de Mohanad Yaqubi es el de entrelazar distintas temporalidades. Las películas revolucionarias de Palestina -perdidas luego de la invasión de Israel al Líbano en 1982- conviven con imágenes del presente: el trabajo en la sala de montaje -como invocando a Dziga Vertov- y las imágenes documentales de colegio en la Palestina actual. Pasados y presentes de Palestina: y es la misma moneda.

In his film Our Music, Jean-Luc Godard says: Starting in 1948, the people of Israel became the stuff of fiction, the Palestinians – documentaries. Shot and reverse shot. Two sides of the same coin. In times of planned obsolescence and perpetual novelty, there are filmmakers who suggest making recycled cinema, searching in the rubbles of history, finding that which has been lost and forgotten, and inventing, through editing, a new memory. In Mohanad Yaqubi’s work, it is intertwining different temporalities. Palestine’s groundbreaking films- lost after Israel’s invasion into Lebanon in 1982- coexist with imagery from today: the work in the editing room -as if summoning Dziga Vertov- and the documentary images of today’s Palestine. MOHANAD YAQUBI

Mohanad Yaqubi es un director y productor nacido en 1981 en Kuwait, quien además es profesor de Cine en la Academia Internacional de Arte en Palestina. Fue uno de los fundadores de la productora Idioms Film, en Ramala, y de Subversive Film, colectivo de artistas y curadores dedicado principalmente al cine activista. Fue director y productor de varios cortos, tanto de fi cción como documentales, que se proyectaron en diversos festivales internacionales.

Mohanad Yaqubi, born in 1981 in Kuwait, is a filmmaker and producer and teaches Film Studies at the International Art Academy in Palestine. He is one of the founders of the Ramallah-based production outfi t Idioms Film and the research and curatorial collective Subversive Film, which focuses on militant film practices. He has directed and produced several short films, both fi ction and documentary, which have been shown in international festivals.
