EN ATTENDANT LES HIRONDELLES | A LA ESPERA DE LAS GOLONDRINAS

Si en su magnífico mediometraje Les jours d’avant Karim Moussaoui retrata los “años negros” argelinos desde el punto de vista de dos adolescentes, en su primer largometraje retrata a tres personajes de generaciones y situaciones sociales distintas a través de los que explora los síntomas de una sociedad que no consigue superar el embotamiento tras la guerra civil. Este tríptico en el que el testigo de una agresión opta por no involucrarse, una joven mujer tiene un momento de duda de camino a otra ciudad para casarse y un médico se ve asaltado por un oscuro secreto del pasado, avanza como un juego de postas en el que los personajes se encuentran con la oportunidad de hacerse responsables de sus actos y de sus futuros. Las decisiones formales de Moussaoui, que apelan a no sobrecargar de relato ni de discurso y que encuentra el equilibrio justo entre la emoción y la distancia, se sugieren como las marcas autorales de un director que no pierde la esperanza de que algún día las golondrinas, finalmente, lleguen a Argelia.

If Karim Moussaoui depicts the ‘black years’ in his magnificent medium-length film Les jours d’avant through the point of view of two teens, in his first feature film he has chosen to depict it through three characters from three different generations and social backgrounds as he explores the symptoms of a society who cannot get over their numbness in the aftermath of the civil war. This triptych in which a witness of an assault chooses to stay away, a young woman hesitates on her way to getting married in another city, and a doctor is confronted by a dark secret from the past, moves forward like a relay game where they come across the opportunity to take responsibility for their actions –and their futures. Moussaoui’s formal decisions, which aim at not overdoing the storytelling nor the discourse and finding the right balance between emotion and distance, imply the directorial treats of a filmmaker who has not yet given up hope that the birds, more specifically, the swallows, will, finally, arrive in Algeria some day.

KARIM MOUSSAOUI

Nacido en 1975, Karim es un miembro activo de una de las más importantes asociaciones de cine independientes de Argelia, Chrysalis, para la que actúa como promotor del cine club. Karim trabajó en varias obras de teatro y películas. En attendant les hirondelles fue realizado gracias al apoyo del taller Méditalents, donde su guión para el largometraje fue seleccionado.

Born in 1975, Karim is an active member of one of the most important independent film associations in Algeria, Chrysalis, promoting its film club. Karim has worked in several theatre plays and films. He was able to complete his feature En attendant les hirondelles thanks to the support of the Méditalents workshop, where the screenplay for the film was selected.
