SAMIR IN THE DUST | SAMIR ENTRE LA POLVAREDA

"No entiendo lo que ves en este desorden, en este país, en esta mugre. [...] No filmaría aquí si fuera tú".
Un encuentro íntimo entre el director Mohamed Ouzine, de regreso a su tierra natal, fascinado por estos paisajes montañosos que desprenden una tranquilidad aparente, y su sobrino Samir, que vive del contrabando de petróleo entre un pueblo argelino y la frontera marroquí, atormentado por una vida agotadora, monótona y solitaria.
En estos montes áridos que bordean el mar Mediterráneo, Samir no ve nada más que arena, rocas, viento y polvo. Sueña con liberarse de sus miedos, del olor omnipresente del petróleo que lo vuelve loco, sueña con otra vida.
En medio de la noche, a la luz de un cigarrillo siempre prendido, aparece la incomprensión de Samir frente al proyecto de su tío, y la toma de conciencia del director de que este hombre sentado del otro lado de la cámara no puede ofrecerle lo que venía buscando.
Samir entre la polvareda es un retrato conmovedor, una búsqueda de sí mismo, una confrontación con la realidad, en la frontera entre lo trivial y lo sublime.

A close meeting between the director, Mohamed Ouzine, back in his homeland and fascinated by these mountainous landscapes which emit an apparent calm, and his nephew Samir, who lives off petroleum smuggling between an Algerian town and the Moroccan border, afflicted by a tiring, monotonous, and lonely life.
In these arid hills that border the Mediterranean Sea, Samir can’t see anything but sand, rocks, wind and dust. He dreams of shedding his fears, and the omnipresent petroleum smell that drives him crazy. He dreams of another life.
In the middle of the night, in the light of a continually lit cigarette, Samir’s lack of understanding of his uncle’s project turns up, and the director’s awareness that this man, sitting on the other side of the camera, can’t offer him what he was looking for.
Samir in the Dust is an emotional portrait, a self-discovery, a clash against reality, on the fringe between the trivial and the magnificent.

Mohamed Ouzine ingresó al terreno de lo audiovisual a través de la fotografía. Sus primeras películas abordaban cuestiones sociológicas. Comenzó su carrera cuando codirigió One Hour Only con Vianney Lambert, que describía la vida en prisión. Más adelante dirigió Caravane, sobre el largo viaje de una comunidad evangélica gitana que busca a Dios en las rutas de Francia. A partir de ese momento, Ouzine comenzó a cuestionarse sus orígenes, lo que se convirtió en el argumento del guión de ficción Tarik’s War, antes de asumir la dirección de Samir in the Dust.

Mohamed Ouzine entered the audiovisual domain through photography. His first movies focused on sociological issues. He started by co-directing An Hour Only with Vianney Lambert, which describes life in jail. He then directed Caravane, a film about the long journey of a gypsy evangelical community looking for God on French paths. After this, he started questioning his origins, which became the subject of a scenario for Tarik’s War, before jumping into the direction of Samir in the Dust.
