THE AFTERMATH OF THE INAUGURATION OF THE PUBLIC TOILET AT KILOMETER 375:
Un hombre estornuda durante la inauguración oficial de un baño público en el desierto. El miedo de haber ofendido a su superior lo acosa y consecuentemente se obsesiona con redimirse. Sirviéndose de los recursos de la comedia negra à la Jacques Tati, y basándose en el cuento "Muerte de un funcionario" de Antón Chéjov, Omar El Zohairy indaga la neurosis del miedo desde una perspectiva absurda en dónde la escenografía – casi monocromática, entre verdes y grises - y los planos fijos acompañan un guion cuidadosamente trabajado. Los escenarios depurados y homogéneos exponen a un Egipto sin identidad, algo inusual en el cine árabe, pero ¡bienvenido sea! The Aftermath… es definitivamente un corto prometedor de un cineasta que de a poco sella su identidad.

A man sneezes during the official opening of a public bath in the desert. The fear of having offended his boss worries him and, in consequence, he obsesses about redeeming himself. Using the resources of the black comedy à la Jacques Tati and based on the book “The Death of a Government Clerk” by Antón Chéjov, Omar El Zohairy explores neurotic fear from an absurd perspective in which the scenography - almost monochrome, between greens and greys - and the fixed plans underpin a delicately crafted script. The refined and homogeneous sceneries show an Egypt without identity, something unusual in Arabic films, but very welcomed anyway! The Aftermath of the Inauguration of the Public Toilet at Kilometer 375 is definitely a promising short film by a filmmaker that is sealing his identity little by little.

El Zohairy Nació en Cairo en 1988. Estudió dirección cinematográfica en The High Institute of Cinema en El Cairo. Durante sus estudios, trabajó como asistente para Yosry Nasrallah y Ahmed Abdallah, entre otros directores destacados de Egipto. Su primer corto Breathe Out se estrenó en el 8. ° Festival de Cine de Dubái y ganó el Premio a la Mención Especial del Jurado en la competencia de cortos Muhr Arab. También compitió en la 34. ª Edición del Festival de Cine Mediterráneo de Montpellier- Cinemed. Su segundo corto, The Aftermath of the Inauguration of the Public Toilet at Kilometer 375, fue elegido por la selección Cinéfondation del Festival de Cannes en 2014. Fue el primer corto egipcio seleccionado para esta competencia.
El Zohairy Born in Cairo in 1988. He studied film directing at the High Institute of Cinema in Cairo. During his studies, he worked as an assistant for Yosry Nasrallah and Ahmed Abdallah, among many other prominent film directors of Egypt. His first short feature film Breathe Out premiered at the 8th Dubai Film Festival and won the Jury Special Mention Prize at Muhr Arab Short Competition. It also competed at the 34th Montpellier Mediterranean Film Festival – Cinemed. His second short, The Aftermath of the Inauguration of the Public Toilet at Kilometer 375, was selected by the Cannes Film Festival’s Cinéfondation 2014. It was the first Egyptian film to be selected in this competition.
