La imagen se agranda, y aparece un rostro que estaba escondido. Ahora lo vemos, pixelado. El pixel no importa, no es una cuestión estética o técnica, sino política. En Recollection, la última película de Kamal Al Jafari, hay un trabajo de found footage, de cine reciclado. Al Jafari hace aparecer lo que estaba invisible y hace desaparecer lo protagónico. Se invierten los roles: hegemónicos y subalternos, dominadores y dominados, amo y esclavo. Lo que estaba en primer plano es borrado y solo queda la locación y los personajes secundarios, los extras. Tomando material de archivo de películas filmadas en Jaffa (Palestina) entre los años ‘60 a los años ‘90 -entre ellas las del famoso Chuck Norris- el realizador efectúa un nuevo montaje que, como propone Walter Benjamin, recupera lo no-sido de la historia, reactualiza esas imágenes en el presente, salen a la luz y se lanzan hacia el futuro.

The image grows larger and before us, a face emerges that was hidden. We see it now, pixeled. But pixels don’t matter as they are not an aesthetic or technical matter, but a political matter. In Recollection, Kamal Aljafari’s latest film, there’s a found footage work. Al Jafari turns invisible to visible making what used to be the protagonist, disappear. The roles are inverted: hegemonic and subordinates, oppressors and oppressed, masters and servants. What was once in the forefront is erased and only the sets and the extras are left. Using archive material from films shot in Jaffa (Palestine) between the ‘60s and the ‘90s - amongst them, those starring famed Chuck Norris - the director executes a new montage that, as Walter Benjamin proposed, “interrupts” history and retrieves what has been ignored; he brings those images back to the present time, into the light, and launches them into the future.

Kamal Aljafari es graduado de la Academia de Artes Audiovisuales KHM de Colonia, Alemania, ciudad de la que recibió el Premio a las Artes Visuales en 2004. Sus películas incluyen The Roof (“El techo”, 2006), ganadora del Premio a Mejor Producción Internacional en el festival de cine arte Images en Toronto y a Mejor Banda Sonora en el Festival Internacional de Cine Documental de Marsella; y Port of Memory (“Puerto del recuerdo”, 2009), galardonada con el premio Louis Marcorelles el en Cinema du Reel Paris.
Kamal Aljafari is a graduate of the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne, where he received and the Visual Art Prize of the City in 2004. His films include The Roof (2006), which won the Best International Award at the Images Festival in Toronto and Best soundtrack at Fidmarseille, and Port of Memory (2009), which received the Prix Louis Marcorelles at Cinema du Reel Paris.
