SINOPSIS

Filmada en el transcurso de tres años en Homs, Siria, el filme acompaña a dos jóvenes sobresalientes desde el momento en que sueñan con la libertad y la defensa del pacifismo hasta el momento en que son forzados a elegir de manera diferente. Basset, arquero del equipo nacional de fútbol de 19 años, se vuelve cantante y líder manifestante icónico; y luego, combatiente. El filme sigue también a Ossama, de 24 años, cuyas opiniones viran desde que es un camarógrafo amateur con una opinión crítica e irónica, hasta que es detenido por las fuerzas de seguridad del régimen. Es la historia de una ciudad acerca de la que el mundo ha oído mucho, pero a la que nunca ha podido acercarse realmente. Filmed over three years in Homs, Syria, the film accompanies two outstanding young men from the time they are dreaming of freedom and defending pacifism, to the time when choices are forced on them to go in a different direction. Basset, the 19 year-old national football team goalkeeper, turns into an iconic demonstration leader and singer and then, into a fighter. Ossama, a 24 year-old renowned citizen-cameraman who is critical, pacifist, and ironic, changes his views when he is detained by the regime's security forces. It is the story of a city which the world has heard of a lot of, but never really got close to. Return to Homs is a modern times epic of youth in war, and of forced choices.

BIOGRAFÍA

Talal Derki, nacido en Damasco en 1977, es un director sirio que se recibió de Realizador en 2003 en Atenas. Ha hecho dos cortos de ficción y cinco largometrajes documentales. Sus films han sido exhibidos en varios festivales (Thessaloniki, Rotterdam Arab Film Festival...) y ha ganado premios como el Silver Hawk en el Rotterdam Arab Film Festival de 2011 por Azadi y una mención especial del jurado en el Aram Camera Film Festival de 2012 por Lajat ─ambos filmes hechos durante la revolución siria y proyectados bajo alias antes de que Talal decidiera partir de Siria con su familia. Fue finalista de los Rory Peck Awards en 2012. Aparte de ser realizador, es también un poeta que cuenta con trabajos publicados. Ha trabajado también intensivamente como periodista para importantes agencias y medios como Thompson Reuters, CNN, ITV, Al Arabiya y France 24 entre otros.

Talal Derki, born in Damascus in 1977, is a Syrian filmmaker who studied film directing in Athens (he graduated in 2003). He has made two short fiction films and five documentaries. His films have been previously screened at various festivals (Thessaloniki, Rotterdam Arab Film Festival...) and his awards include the Silver Hawk at the Rotterdam Arab Film Festival 2011 for Azadi and a jury special mention from Arab Camera Film Festival 2012 for Lajat ─both films made during the Syrian revolution and screened with alias names, before Talal decided to leave Syria with his family. He has also worked intensively as a video reporter for important agencies and outlets including Thompson Reuters, CNN, ITV, Al Arabiya, France 24... Among others. He was a finalist at the Rory Peck Awards 2012. Talal is also a published poet.
