THANK GOD IT’S FRIDAY

“Gracias a Dios, es viernes" cuenta la vida diaria que transcurre en el pueblo palestino Nabi Saleh y en el asentamiento israelí Halamish, ubicado enfrente. Día tras día, las protestas se vuelven más intensas. Tal es así que un viernes de diciembre, Mustafa Timimi, de Nabi Saleh, es asesinado de un disparo. Al final de la película, los productores muestran la filmación tanto en Nabi Saleh como en el asentamiento Halamish.

"Thank God it´s Friday" follows the daily life in the Palestinian village Nabi Saleh and the opposite Israeli settlement Halamish. Day after day the protests are getting more intense. During a protest on a Friday in december, Mustafa Tamimi from Nabi Saleh got shot to death. When ´Thank God It´s friday´ is finished the filmmakers return to organize a screening in Nabi Saleh and the Halamish Settlement itself.

Jan Beddegenoodts se graduó como periodista en 2009. Después de su graduación, viajó y trabajó como fotógrafo y periodista en India, Cuba, y los Estados-Unidos. Trabajo un año por la Televisión nacional de Surinam (STVS). El año pasado viajó y trabajó en Palestina y Israel durante ocho meses, donde realizó dos documentales. Su primer documental "The Taste of Freedom" ("El Sabor de la libertad") compara las raves israelíes y las protestas en Palestina. Su segundo documental, "Thank God It's Friday" ("Gracias a Dios es Viernes"), es un retrato de la vida un pueblo palestino Nabi Saleh enfrentado a la presencia de una colonia israelí Halamish.

Jan Beddegenoodts graduated as a journalist in 2009. After he graduated as a journalist, he started working both as photographer and journalist and he travelled through India, Cuba and North America. He did his internship with STVS (The national Television of Suriname). Last year he travelled to Palestine and Israel for eight months and produced two documentaries. His first documentary, "The Taste of Freedom" compares between Israeli raves and Palestine protests. His second documentary, "Thank God it’s Friday" is a portrait from the Palestinian village Nabi Saleh when facing the presence of the Israeli settlement Halamish.

Un pueblo sin tierra es un documental provocador que cuestiona el paradigma de ser o “pro Israel” o “pro Palestina”. Presenta destacados activistas israelíes y palestinos que han sido transformados por sus experiencias y emplean sus energías en revolucionar sus sociedades. Jeff Halper, Eitan Bronstein, Ali Abunimah, Neta Golan y Ghada Karmi sacan a la luz un dogma de separación étnica, base del nacionalismo israelí, que hace que una reconciliación sea imposible. Armados con este pensamiento, estos valientes vanguardistas han dedicado sus vidas a desafiar el status quo y están trabajando para construir un futuro basado en la integración y no en la segregación. SINOPSIS
Mars at Sunrise representa abstractamente el conflicto entre artistas en ambos lados de la frontera militarizada israelí y explora de qué manera una mente creativa y poderosa sobrevive, e incluso prospera, bajo presión. Cuando Azzadeh, una joven poeta judío estadounidense, viaja a Israel para ver la tierra y la gente por primera vez, descubre historias de soldados israelíes que reflexionan acerca de la complejidad de su servicio militar; las familias palestinas que son desplazadas; y del esfuerzo que realizan artistas de ambos lados para pintar rodeados por el conflicto. Mientras aguarda en un puesto de control en Jenin, Azzadeh conoce a Khaled, un apuesto pintor palestino cuya historia de vida atestigua cuando se encuentran con Eyal, un joven oficial que una vez interrogó a Khaled, en el próximo puesto de control.

Mars at Sunrise abstractly portrays the conflict between artists on either side of Israel's militarized borders and explores how a powerful and creative mind survives, and even thrives, under pressure. When Azzadeh, a young Jewish American poet, travels to Israel to see the land and people she has only ever heard about through the voices of others she uncovers stories of Israeli soldiers who reflect on the complexity of their military service; Palestinian families who are displaced; and artists from both cultures who strive to paint a picture of life surrounded by conflict. While waiting at a checkpoint in Jenin, Azzadeh meets Khaled, a handsome Palestinian painter whose life story she soon witnesses as they come face to face with Eyal, a young officer who once interrogated Khaled, at the next checkpoint.

En 2009, Jessica comienza a aescribir su primer filme narrativo, Mars at Sunrise; que fue producido en Nazareth en el 2011. La película es protagonizada por el ganador del Emmy Ali Suliman y cuenta con la participación de Guy El Hanan. La película también cuenta con poesía original de Haale Gafori y una banda de sonido en seis idiomas. Lo recaudado por el filme irá al nuevo Fajr Palestine Film Fund (fondo para el cine palestino) y financiará la producción de obras experimentales o que desafiantes realizadas por la diáspora palestina.

Jessica Habie is a director, NYU Tisch graduate and founder of Eyes Infinite Films. In 2009 Jessica began writing her first narrative film Mars at Sunrise which was produced in Nazareth in 2011. The film stars golden globe winning actor Ali Suliman and introduces Guy El Hanan. The film also features original poetry by Haale Gafori and a soundtrack in six languages (English, Hebrew, Russian, Yiddish, Farsi and Arabic). Proceeds for the film will go to the newly created Fajr Palestine Film Fund and will support the production of experimental and otherwise genre defiant works of cinema from the Palestinian Diaspora.

SYNOPSIS
Just Play contiene en su trama elementos de la ocupación, el conflicto y de música. Sin embargo, se trata de un grupo de hombres y mujeres que trabajan junto a Al Kamandjati, una asociación cultural palestina que desarrolla un programa de educación musical en un territorio que va desde la franja de Gaza hasta los campos de refugiados de la agencia UNRWA en Líbano. Este documental explora las esperanzas, los distintos puntos de vista y vidas de aquellos que tornan la música en un medio de resiliencia y liberación. Busca viajar a través de sus mundos y contestar algunas preguntas simples pero elementales como: ¿Quiénes son? ¿Por qué está una orquesta desafiando al ejército? ¿Cómo tocar a Beethoven, Mozart, y Bach en un ambiente a menudo descripto como aquel en donde colisionan civilizaciones? ¿Qué es lo que está en riesgo?

Just Play contains plot elements of occupation, the conflict and music. But it is about a group of men and women working with Al Kamandjati, a Palestinian Cultural Association conducting a program of music education in a territory that goes down to the Gaza Strip from the UNRWA refugee camps of Lebanon. This documentary explores the hopes, the different points of view and lives of men, women and kids who turn music into a means of resilience and liberation. It seeks to travel through their worlds and to answer some simple but fundamental questions: Who are they? Why is an orchestra challenging an army? How to play Beethoven, Mozart and Bach in an environment which is often depicted and perceived as the space of the clash of civilizations? What is at stake?
